Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator performs manual work assisting in the operations and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant and its associated equipment, as well as all other work as required. SUPERVISION Works under the supervision of the Superintendent of Public Works & the Chief Operator or their designees. Performs varied duties of a routine nature following clearly prescribed procedures. MAJOR DUTIES (essential job functions) 1. Assists the Chief Operator in the efficient operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant, sewer collection and pumping system, and sludge disposal processing system. 2. Evaluates and makes necessary repairs to the plant and pump station equipment 3. Undertakes preventative maintenance schedules and recommends repair and replacement suggestions. 4. Determines remedial action when appropriate of all plant equipment 5. Ensures proper functioning of all electrical power generating equipment. 6. Operates flusher in cleaning of sewer lines as needed 7. Maintains repair and general maintenance logs and records 8. Maintains inventory of laboratory chemicals and orders necessary supplies 9. Assists in preparation of monthly reports to be sent to state and federal agencies. 10. Assists with the removal of snow when necessary, to clear plant and pump station access ways. 11. Assists in the collection and laboratory testing of wastewater to ensure the maintenance of a proper biological balance of treatment systems. 12. Cross trains to operate Water Treatment Plant when needed. RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS -High school graduate or equivalent; work related experience demonstrating ability to perform above functions; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. -Two years' experience in municipal wastewater and sewer collections operations or any equivalent combination preferred. -Thorough knowledge of the principals and operating procedures of wastewater treatment and sanitary systems. -Basic knowledge in plumbing, electrical and ability to read blueprints. -Ability to follow instructions and carry out assigned tasks. -Must be able to communicate well with others and possess organizational skills and ability to work unsupervised. -Must have a valid driver's license. -Must obtain Massachusetts Certification as Grade IV Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator within 6 months.
